What is the Academic Heritage of Ukraine in Wartime about?

The Academic Heritage of Ukraine During the Russo-Ukrainian War: Damaged and Destroyed University Buildings

Since the beginning of the war in Donbas (from 2014) and the large-scale Russian military aggression against Ukraine (from February 24, 2022), Ukraine's academic heritage has suffered significant losses. In particular, numerous buildings of Ukrainian universities – such as academic buildings, libraries, laboratories, and sports complexes – have been damaged or destroyed due to Russian bombings and shelling.

The goal of the research project is to collect and systematize open data on the damage to and destruction of buildings at higher education institutions in Ukraine during the Russo-Ukrainian War.

The research focus of the project is to archive information from open sources – such as reports in Ukrainian and international media, statements from municipal and government officials, and information from higher education institutions – regarding the damage inflicted on Ukrainian universities by the war.

The project currently includes information on 15 higher education institutions in Ukraine that have been affected by the Russo-Ukrainian War. Efforts to collect and systematize additional data are ongoing.

The project team hopes the project will underscore the importance of strengthening the protection of Ukraine's academic heritage during the war and encourage comprehensive support for universities to facilitate Ukraine's ongoing recovery and development.
